Three-channel video | 9 min
The work includes carbon papers used by the participants during the recording process. While dark traces remain on the paper, the carbon sheets themselves retain only translucent voids where material has been removed. These partial absences became central to the work, reflecting the way sensation often persists not as a complete form, but as a residue left behind through disappearance.
The three-channel video juxtaposes five participants moving at different speeds and through different modes of touch. Friction sounds, shallow breathing, hesitant gestures, and repeated attempts to read become visible as bodily responses rather than acts of comprehension. While the work recalls the act of reading Braille, it operates in an opposite condition. Unlike Braille, which is designed to communicate information clearly through touch, the text in Disconnected resists complete understanding.
The work reflects on the limitations of language. Although we often believe that language allows us to understand one another, words are always separated from tone, expression, silence, and lived experience. Meaning is continuously transformed through interpretation, memory, and desire. Disconnected reveals the misalignments that emerge from this condition, exposing the distance between sensation, language, and understanding.
Disconnected는 감각과 언어 사이의 간극을 탐구한 3채널 영상 설치 작업이다. 참여자들은 눈을 가린 채 돌출된 문장을 손끝으로 더듬으며 읽고, 동시에 반대편 손으로 그 감각을 기록한다. 읽기와 기록은 하나의 행위처럼 진행되지만 반복적으로 어긋난다. 문장은 끝내 완전히 해독되지 않으며, 남겨진 흔적 또한 원래의 형태와 의미를 온전히 복원하지 못한다.
작업에는 참여자들이 사용했던 먹지가 함께 설치된다. 종이 위에는 검은 흔적이 남지만, 먹지 자체에는 긁혀 나간 반투명한 공백만이 남아 있다. 나는 선명하게 남겨진 결과보다 일부가 제거된 채 남아 있는 상태에 주목했다. 그것은 감각이 언제나 완전한 형태로 남기보다 사라지는 과정 속에서 잔여의 형태로 지속되는 방식과 닮아 있기 때문이다.
3채널 영상은 다섯 명의 참여자가 서로 다른 속도와 방식으로 움직이는 과정을 병치한다. 사각거리는 마찰음과 얕은 호흡, 머뭇거리는 손의 움직임은 이해의 과정이라기보다 신체의 반응으로 드러난다. 이 작업은 점자를 읽는 행위를 연상시키지만 실제로는 그 반대의 상태에 가깝다. 점자가 촉각을 통해 명확한 정보를 전달하는 체계라면, 이 작업 속 문장은 촉각으로 읽히면서도 끝내 완전히 이해되지 않는다.
나는 언어를 가장 불완전한 감각 구조 중 하나라고 생각한다. 언어는 표정과 말투, 침묵과 경험이 제거된 채 전달되며, 읽는 사람의 기억과 욕망에 따라 다른 의미로 변형된다. Disconnected는 이러한 조건 속에서 발생하는 어긋남과 불완전한 이해의 상태를 드러낸다.
